Fire crews work to open the roof on Amherst Rd for ventilation

18 Amhest Rd Working Fire   12 November

At 1113 on November 12, the Beverly Fire Department responded to a report of a possible fire in the wall at 18 Amherst Rd. The first arriving responder was from the Police Department who confirmed that there was a fire in the house. Deputy Chief Acciavatti was the first fire official on scene and ordered the crew of Engine 4 to advance a line into the home to search for fire.

Inside the house, crews found moderate smoke but didn’t encounter any visible fire. Crews made holes in the ceiling in an effort to expose fire hidden in the attic then climbed into the attic through a set of access stairs to find heavy smoke and moderate fire and heat conditions. While crews including FF. Brian Latulippe and Lt. James Archibald worked from the stairs, Firefighters from Ladder 1 including Firefighters David Genest, Kevin Smith and Capt. Michael  McCadden cut a hole in the roof to allow the heat and smoke to escape without spreading through the attic.

Within 50 minutes, the fire was completely knocked down and Deputy Chief Acciavatti was able to release crews from the scene. Heavy fire damage was confined to the attic space with mild damage inside one first floor wall. There was also some water damage to the ceilings in the garage and kitchen.

One person was in the home at the time the fire broke out. He contacted the fire Department when he saw evidence of a fire in the wall and began to bring a garden hose into the home. He was uninjured and remained on scene to speak with fire investigators.

Deputy Chief William Walsh and Lieutenant Robert Bergeron investigated the cause of the fire. After looking over the scene, it was determined that the fire was caused unintentionally when a bolt was allowed to pierce the insulation of an electrical wire at an outlet in the kitchen. The fire quickly spread up the voids between the wall studs into the attic where stored combustibles and the roof structure burned.

Damage was assessed at roughly $10,000.00.
