At 1216 on March 5, the Beverly Fire Department received a call from the FAA tower at Beverly Airport reporting an aircraft in distress. The aircraft, a Citation Jet was reported to have one of its two engines out and a battery failure warning. A second call reported that there was no longer radio communication between the Jet and the Tower.
Due to the potential for a large incident, fire crews from Danvers and Wenham were also dispatched to the scene as well as Northeast Ambulance, Beverly and Danvers Police. Upon arrival, crews were advised that the aircraft was eight miles out and stood by for the landing.
As the aircraft touched down, the main landing gear tires blew out sending smoke and sparks into the air. The pilot guided the plane down the runway until it cam to a stop just past the location where emergency apparatus was standing by. As pilots exited the aircraft, Beverly Engine5 and Danvers Engine 3 responded out on the runway with Chief Richard Pierce and Deputy Chief Paul Cotter of the Beverly Fire Department and Deputy Chief Kevin Farrell of the Danvers Fire Department.
Crews from Beverly and Danvers stretched out hoselines as a precaution due to the potential for fire caused by overheated brakes and a battery warning. Once it was determined that there was no fire, crews picked up their equipment and left the scene so the aircraft could be moved.
There were two people on the plane, a pilot and co pilot. Neither suffered any injuries.
